Howard's Club H: A Staple in Bowling Green, Ohio

Nearly 100 years ago, Howard’s Confectionary Store took root in Bowling Green, Ohio. Once prohibition was lifted, the candy store transitioned into the Howard’s Club H that Bowling Green residents and students have come to know and love.

Howard’s Club H Puts Bowling Green, Ohio on the Music Map

In the late 1960s, blues and jazz musicians stopped to play at Howard’s on their tours between Memphis and Chicago. As its reputation as a music venue grew, Howard’s Club H began welcome a number of pop and local bands to the stage as well. Michael Katon, a big name in blues, one that is honored in the Michigan Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has played Howard’s a number of times.

Musical Roots Through and Through

Owner and booking manager, Steve Feehan has been familiar with Howard’s Club H since he was 15 years old. As a teen he played with the band Mad Hatter which performed regularly at the bar. Feehan left a job and managed Howard’s for a friend who had acquired it in a purchase, before he bought the bar himself in 2016. Although he has refurbished some of the original aspects of the venue, Feehan has worked hard to maintain the original feel of the bar, right down to the graffitied walls.

Live music is integral to Howard’s Club’s identity as a bar – an operation that was threatened by the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Savings and small business grants kept the bar afloat throughout the pandemic and the beloved Bowling Green, Ohio staple remains an important pillar for the Bowling Green community.
